Celtic Musings: Meditations on the Midwinter Dream
Pilgrim Lutheran Church
St. Paul, MN
Share this event:

Marc Anderson, Dick Hensold, and Michelle Kinney will weave their evocative, improvisatory magic with traditional tunes, new music, and their full range of unique instruments, in an all-instrumental program worthy of the spirited and contemplative roots of the ensemble.

While this concert uses traditional Celtic music as its stylistic base, its really about innovation and improvisation.  This ensemble has been accompanying a contemplative church service for 17 years, playing this style of music but also assisting readings and poetry with improvisational accompaniments.  They continue this tradition by adding selected poems to the program, some composed by percussionist Marc Anderson, and backing them up appropriately.  And while the concert emphasizes the music, the presentation is consistent with the contemplative tradition of the ensemble.  The unusual, ethereal instrumentation of pipes, whistles, cello and percussion creates a sonic texture that is at once evocative, peaceful, focused, and lively.

280 tickets will be available for purchase at brownpapertickets.com and at the door for $15 while they last.  Box office is located inside the church.  A reception with the musicians will be held after the performance.

Marc Anderson is an internationally acclaimed percussionist with credits on more than 250 recordings, including his solo CDs, Time Fish (1994) and Ruby (2000). He has made numerous national and international tours with Steve Tibbetts, with Choying Drolma and two other Tibetan Buddhist nuns, and others.  Twice winner of the Jerome Foundation Travel and Study Grants and McKnight Foundation Fellowships, he has also been awarded a State Arts Board Grant and a West Bank School of Music Composers Grant. He has received four Minnesota Music Awards in various categories and was once nominated for Minnesota Artist of the Year.  He is a priest in the Soto Zen lineage, and the founder / director of the M2 Foundation, a St. Paul non-profit that advocates for more mindful and compassionate communities. Hes on staff at Macalester College in the Center for Spiritual and Religious Life and at Hamline University in both the anthropology department and with the Wesley Center for Spirituality, Service and Social Justice.

Dick Hensold is the leading Northumbrian smallpiper in North America, and for the past 20 years has performed and taught in England, Scotland, Japan, Canada, and across the United States. In this concert he will play Northumbrian small-pipes, reel pipes, recorder, seljefl√łyte, and low whistle.  Based in St Paul, MN, he is a full-time musician, presenting the traditional music of Scotland, Cape Breton Island, and Northumberland, as well as Nordic folk music, and early music.  In addition to the obligatory weddings and funerals, he is also an active composer, accompanist, studio musician, church musician and theater musician. Theatre projects have included work at the Guthrie Theatre, Theatre de la Jeune Lune, Children's Theater Company, with Ruth MacKenzie's Kalevala and Snow Queen, and TigerLion Arts outdoor walking play Nature, for which he was composer/music director.  His solo Northumbrian smallpipes CD Big Music for Northumbrian Smallpipes was released in 2007. Cellist and composer Michelle Kinney is happiest playing her cello in non-traditional and improvisational contexts. After receiving an MA in Performance Studies from New York University she stayed in NYC for 13 years, recording, performing and touring with some of the most respected innovators in new music today; bridging musical genres and scenes, from art music (Henry Threadgill, Butch Morris, Myra Melford), to pop (Sheryl Crow, Natalie Merchant, Lou Reed). She has also been on the Celtic music scene for many years with Susan McKeown and The Chanting House, recording, performing and making several tours to Ireland. Currently Michelle performs with the local original music groups Maithree, led by S. Indian Veena virtuoso Nirmala Rajasekar, the 2-cello, drums and tabla quartet Jelloslave and leads her own band What We Have Here. As a composer she has received awards and grants from The Bush Foundation, The Jerome Foundation, McKnight Foundation, NEA/Rockefeller, Harvestworks/Studio Pass, and the American Composers Forum.
